Isabel Thomas is a British science writer and children’s author, renowned for her extensive contributions to science literature for young audiences. She has authored over 280 books, covering topics from biology and chemistry to environmental science and biography. Her works have been translated into more than 30 languages, making science accessible and engaging for children worldwide.
Thomas studied Human Sciences at the University of Oxford and later completed an MPhil in Education Research at the University of Cambridge. Before becoming a full-time writer, she worked as a journalist and editor, which honed her ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and engagingly.
Her notable works include Moth: An Evolution Story (2018), which won the AAAS/Subaru Prize for Excellence in Science Books in 2020, and Fox: A Circle of Life Story (2020), which received the same award in 2023. Other acclaimed titles are The Bedtime Book of Impossible Questions (2022) and Exploring the Elements (2020), both of which have been recognized for their educational value and engaging content.
In addition to her books, Thomas contributes to children’s science magazines such as Whizz Pop Bang and The Week Junior Science + Nature, and develops STEM outreach resources for organizations like the Wellcome Sanger Institute and the BBC. She is also a frequent speaker at literary and science festivals, including the Cheltenham Science Festival and the Oxford Literary Festival, and has appeared on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour.
