Kate Winter is an author-illustrator of children’s non-fiction. She studied Fine Art at the Slade School of Fine Art and completed an MA in Children’s Book Illustration at Cambridge School of Art, where her cave-painting project received the 2019 Ronald Searle Award for Creativity and further student accolades.
Her debut picture book, The Fossil Hunter: How Mary Anning unearthed the truth about the dinosaurs, presents an illustrated life of the pioneering palaeontologist for 7–11s. First published by Puffin in 2023, the 80-page title features panoramic fold-out spreads and accessible factual storytelling.
Winter’s follow-up, The Cave Explorer, tells the story of the rediscovery of the Lascaux cave paintings and invites readers to consider the purpose and meaning of prehistoric art. It was published by Puffin on 11 September 2025.
The Fossil Hunter won the 2024 Klaus Flugge Prize.
