Veronique Tadjo is an author, poet, and illustrator from Côte d’Ivoire. She writes for both children and adults, and her work often draws on African oral traditions and history. Tadjo studied at the University of Abidjan and later at the Sorbonne in Paris. She has taught in various countries, including Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa.
Tadjo’s children’s books include Mamy Wata and the Monster, which was published by A&C Black in 1993. This book was awarded the UNICEF Prize in 1993. Her stories frequently explore themes of community, identity, and the environment, and she is known for incorporating traditional African storytelling techniques into her writing and illustrations.
In addition to her work for children, Tadjo has published poetry and novels for adults. She has participated in numerous literary festivals and has contributed to anthologies and collaborative projects across Africa and beyond.
A notable milestone in her career is the publication of Mamy Wata and the Monster by A&C Black in 1993, which received the UNICEF Prize the same year.
