Valerie Bloom biography

Valerie Bloom is a poet and novelist originally from Jamaica. She is known for her poetry and fiction for children and young people, often drawing on her Caribbean heritage and writing in both English and Jamaican patois. Bloom moved to the United Kingdom in 1979 and has since established a significant presence in children’s literature.

Her poetry collections include Let Me Touch the Sky and Hot Like Fire, both published by Bloomsbury. Bloom’s work frequently appears in anthologies and educational resources, and she has contributed to the promotion of poetry in schools through workshops and performances. She is also the author of the novel Surprising Joy, published by Macmillan Children’s Books.

Valerie Bloom has received recognition for her contribution to literature and education, including being appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2008 for services to poetry. Her poetry collection Hot Like Fire was published by Bloomsbury in 2000.
