Sue Turton is a British television journalist, documentary maker and author whose reporting has spanned conflicts and social movements across the Middle East, North Africa and Asia. She began her national TV career at Sky News, later working for GMTV and spending 12 years as a presenter and correspondent for Channel 4 News. Turton subsequently joined Al Jazeera English as the network’s first Afghanistan correspondent, before covering the Arab Spring and its aftermath from Libya, Syria, Egypt, Iraq and Lebanon.
In 2014, while reporting for Al Jazeera English, Turton was convicted in absentia by an Egyptian court during proceedings that also jailed three of her colleagues; she became a prominent campaigner for their release. Following these events, she continued to present in London and to produce and direct documentaries on global security and social issues. Her journalism has received recognition including Royal Television Society awards.
Turton is the author of a guide to youth activism, This Book Will (Help You) Change the World, illustrated by Alice Skinner and published by Wren & Rook (Hachette Children’s Group) on 21 September 2017. Aimed at teenagers and young adults, it explains how UK politics works, outlines campaigning tools, and offers practical advice on debating, navigating media and organising protest.
Alongside broadcasting and authorship, Turton speaks at festivals, schools and media forums about press freedom, reporting from conflict zones and engaging young people in civic life.
