Simon Usherwood biography

Simon Usherwood is Professor of Politics and International Studies at The Open University, UK, and his academic work is connected with European Union politics. He was previously identified with the University of Surrey, UK, in relation to European integration scholarship.

His books include The European Union: A Very Short Introduction, written with John Pinder. The book covers the development of the European Union from 1950, its institutions, debates between eurosceptics and federalists, and the EU’s international role.

The European Union: A Very Short Introduction has appeared in multiple updated editions. The third edition added material on the Lisbon Treaty, the EU fiscal crisis and the single euro currency, while the fourth edition covered the migrant crisis and the UK’s decision to leave the European Union.

Usherwood has also worked as an editor on The Nested Games of Brexit, with Agnès Alexandre-Collier and Pauline Schnapper. That book examines the United Kingdom’s 2016 decision to withdraw from the European Union and its significance for UK political parties.
