Geraldine McCaughrean is a British author celebrated for her contributions to children’s and young adult literature. Born on 6 June 1951 in London, she pursued a Bachelor of Education at Christ Church College, Canterbury, and initially worked in publishing before becoming a full-time writer in 1988.
McCaughrean has authored over 170 books, including novels, plays, and retellings of classic tales. Her works have been translated into more than 45 languages and published in 61 countries. Notable titles include A Pack of Lies (1988), which won both the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize, and Where the World Ends (2017), which earned her a second Carnegie Medal in 2018.
In 2004, she was selected by Great Ormond Street Hospital to write Peter Pan in Scarlet, the official sequel to J.M. Barrie’s Peter and Wendy. The novel was published in 2006 to mark the centenary of the original work.
McCaughrean’s extensive bibliography includes titles such as The Kite Rider, Stop the Train!, Smile!, Not the End of the World, The Death-Defying Pepper Roux, and The Supreme Lie. She is also known for her retellings of classic literature and myths, including The Odyssey, El Cid, The Canterbury Tales, and Gilgamesh.
Her accolades encompass the Whitbread/Costa Children’s Book Award (three times), the Michael L. Printz Award, the Blue Peter Book Award, and the Smarties Prize. In 2004, she was the UK nominee for the Hans Christian Andersen Award, and she has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and the English Association.
