David Olusoga is a British historian, broadcaster, and author. He is known for his work on history and social issues, particularly relating to race and empire. Olusoga has written several books for children and young adults, including Black and British: A Short, Essential History, published by Macmillan Children’s Books in 2020. This book is an adaptation of his adult title Black and British: A Forgotten History, which won the PEN Hessell-Tiltman Prize in 2017.
Olusoga has also contributed to educational resources and historical publications. His children’s edition of Black and British was shortlisted for the British Book Awards Children’s Illustrated & Non-Fiction Book of the Year in 2021. In addition to his writing, Olusoga has presented numerous BBC television programmes, including Civilisations and Britain’s Forgotten Slave Owners.
In 2019, Olusoga was awarded an OBE for services to history and community integration. His work continues to be recognised for its contribution to public understanding of British history. In 2023, Black and British: An Illustrated History was published, further expanding his work for younger readers.
