Allan Ahlberg, born on 5 June 1938 in Croydon, England, is a British author renowned for his extensive contributions to children’s literature. Raised in Oldbury, West Midlands, he was adopted into a working-class family, an upbringing that influenced the themes of family and community in his work.
Before becoming a writer, Ahlberg held various jobs including postman, plumber’s mate, and gravedigger. He trained as a teacher at Sunderland Technical College, where he met Janet Hall, who would become his wife and illustrator collaborator. Together, they created many acclaimed books, such as Each Peach Pear Plum (1978), which won the Kate Greenaway Medal, and The Jolly Postman (1986), a bestselling and award-winning title.
Following Janet Ahlberg’s death in 1994, Allan continued writing, collaborating with other illustrators including his daughter Jessica Ahlberg. His works include picture books, poetry, and fiction, with titles like Please Mrs. Butler (1983) and Woof! (1986). In 2007, he published The Boyhood of Burglar Bill, an autobiographical novel.
Allan Ahlberg has authored over 100 books. He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2008 for his services to literature. His work remains influential in children’s publishing.
Allan and Janet Ahlberg’s collaborative efforts span over 40 books across various series and standalone works. Notable titles include The Jolly Postman, Each Peach Pear Plum, and Funnybones.
