Sir William Golding was a British novelist, playwright, and poet. He is best known for his debut novel, Lord of the Flies, published in 1954 by Faber and Faber. The novel has become a classic of modern literature and is widely studied in schools.
Golding attended Brasenose College, Oxford, where he studied English literature. Before becoming a full-time writer, he worked as a schoolteacher and served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War.
Following the success of Lord of the Flies, Golding published several other novels, including The Inheritors (1955), Pincher Martin (1956), Free Fall (1959), and The Spire (1964). His later works include Darkness Visible (1979), Rites of Passage (1980), The Paper Men (1984), and Fire Down Below (1989).
Golding received the Booker Prize in 1980 for Rites of Passage. In 1983, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his novels which, according to the Swedish Academy, “illuminate the human condition in the world of today.” He was knighted in 1988 for his services to literature.
Golding’s final novel, The Double Tongue, was published posthumously in 1995.
