Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Tia Fisher is a British author and librarian, known for her debut young adult novel, Crossing the Line (Hot Key Books, 2023). The novel, written in verse, addresses the issue of county lines drug exploitation through the story of a 14-year-old boy named Erik. It was inspired by the real-life experiences of a friend’s son who became involved in a drugs gang between the ages of 13 and 16. Fisher wrote the book to fill a gap in literature available to children on this topic, aiming to provide an age-appropriate narrative that could help young readers understand the dangers of such exploitation. The novel has been praised for its engaging characters and use of verse to convey an emotive and believable story. It won the Yoto Carnegie Shadowers’ Choice Medal in 2024 and the UKLA Book Award in the 11–14+ category in the same year. It was also named The Times ‘Children’s Book of the Week’ and included in the 2024 Reading for Empathy collection. Fisher works in a busy children’s library and has a master’s degree in Writing for Young People from Bath Spa University. She is currently developing two new books: a YA verse novel titled Not Going to Plan, scheduled for release in autumn 2025, and a middle-grade World War II story, Operation Doodlebug, set for publication in 2026 by Piccadilly Press.

Crossing the line is a fast-paced, highly readable novel in verse. This an exciting and growing sub-genre of YA fiction that tends to particularly appeal to reluctant or disengaged readers. The post-covid setting is very relatable and the murky world of drug dealing makes for addictive reading.
