Tad Fitch is an American maritime historian and author who has researched the history of the Titanic and other Atlantic liners for more than 30 years. He is an Associate Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and a member of the Titanic Historical Society, Titanic International Society and The Great War Group. His research has also appeared in the Titanic Historical Society’s journal, The Titanic Commutator.
Fitch co-wrote On a Sea of Glass: The Life & Loss of the RMS Titanic with J. Kent Layton and Bill Wormstedt. The book reconstructs the ship’s design, construction, maiden voyage and sinking using survivor testimony and other historical evidence. It was nominated for the Maritime Foundation’s Mountbatten Award following its original publication in 2012.
Fitch, Layton and Wormstedt later collaborated on Recreating Titanic and Her Sisters: A Visual History, published by The History Press in 2022. The book examines Titanic, Olympic and Britannic through historical research and newly created visual reconstructions. Fitch has also contributed to Report into the Loss of the SS Titanic: A Centennial Reappraisal and co-authored Into the Danger Zone: Sea Crossings of the First World War, Liners During the Great War and The Unseen Aquitania.
His television appearances include the documentary series Titanic: Stories from the Deep and CNN’s How It Really Happened. He is also a co-founder of The Steam & Splendor Network, which produces programmes and podcasts about maritime history.
Fitch was among the authors of the two-volume Lusitania: An Illustrated Biography published by The History Press, with the second volume, A Greyhound’s Downfall, appearing in April 2025.
