Sally Nicholls is a British author known for her contributions to children’s and young adult literature. She was born in Stockton-on-Tees, England. Nicholls pursued her education at the University of Warwick, where she studied Philosophy and Literature. Following her graduation, she completed a master’s degree in Writing for Young People at Bath Spa University.
Nicholls’ debut novel, Ways to Live Forever, was published in 2008. The book received critical acclaim and won the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize and the Glen Dimplex New Writers Award. It was also shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal. The novel explores themes of life and death through the eyes of an eleven-year-old boy with leukaemia.
Her subsequent works include Season of Secrets (2009), which intertwines elements of folklore with a contemporary setting, and All Fall Down (2012), a historical novel set during the Black Death. Nicholls continued to explore historical themes with An Island of Our Own (2015), which won the Independent Bookshop Week Book Award.
In 2018, Nicholls published Things a Bright Girl Can Do, a novel set during the suffragette movement in the early 20th century. This work was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal and the YA Book Prize. Nicholls’ writing often addresses complex themes with sensitivity and insight, appealing to both young readers and adults.
Her other notable works include Close Your Pretty Eyes (2013) and Shadow Girl (2014). Nicholls has been recognised for her ability to tackle challenging subjects while maintaining accessibility for younger audiences.
