Ray Bradbury was an American author known for his contributions to science fiction and fantasy literature. He published his first short story, “Hollerbochen’s Dilemma,” in 1938. Bradbury’s first collection, Dark Carnival, appeared in 1947. His best-known novel, Fahrenheit 451, was published in 1953 by Ballantine Books and has since become a classic of dystopian fiction.
Bradbury’s other notable works include The Martian Chronicles (1950), a series of interconnected stories about the colonisation of Mars, and Something Wicked This Way Comes (1962), a dark fantasy novel. He also wrote Dandelion Wine (1957), a semi-autobiographical novel, and The Illustrated Man (1951), a collection of short stories.
Bradbury received numerous awards for his writing. He was awarded the O. Henry Award in 1947 for his short story “Homecoming.” In 2000, he received the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters. The National Medal of Arts was presented to him in 2004. In 2007, Bradbury received a special citation from the Pulitzer Prize Board for his distinguished, prolific, and deeply influential career as an unmatched author of science fiction and fantasy.
Bradbury’s works have been translated into more than 40 languages and adapted for film, television, and radio. Fahrenheit 451 was adapted into a film directed by François Truffaut in 1966. His influence extends across multiple genres and media. The Pulitzer Prize Board awarded him a special citation in 2007.
