Quentin Blake biography

Quentin Blake is a British illustrator and author, widely recognised for his distinctive artwork in children’s literature. He studied at the University of Cambridge, Chelsea School of Art, and the Institute of Education. Blake began his career as an illustrator with contributions to magazines such as Punch before illustrating his first children’s book, A Drink of Water by John Yeoman, published in 1960.

Blake is particularly known for his long-standing collaboration with Roald Dahl, illustrating many of Dahl’s books including The BFG, Matilda, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. In addition to his work with Dahl, Blake has illustrated books by other authors such as Michael Rosen, Joan Aiken, and Russell Hoban. He has also written and illustrated his own books, including Mister Magnolia and Clown.

Blake’s illustrations are characterised by energetic line work and expressive characters, contributing to the visual identity of numerous classic children’s books. He has also worked on public art projects, including hospital murals and large-scale illustrations for public spaces.

Quentin Blake was appointed the inaugural Children’s Laureate in the United Kingdom from 1999 to 2001. In 2013, he was knighted for services to illustration.
