Recommended reading books for primary and secondary aged children in the UK
Lindsay Littleson is a Scottish children’s author and former primary school teacher. She studied Medieval History and English Literature at the University of Glasgow and worked in the Civil Service before training as a teacher. After many years teaching at primary level, she took early retirement in 2019 to concentrate on writing.
Littleson began writing for children in 2014. Her first novel, The Mixed-Up Summer of Lily McLean, won the 2014 Kelpies Prize for new Scottish writing for children and was published by Floris Books in 2015. She followed it with The Awkward Autumn of Lily McLean. Her other books for Floris include Guardians of the Wild Unicorns, Secrets of the Last Merfolk and Ice Cream Boy.
Her historical fiction includes A Pattern of Secrets, set in Victorian Paisley, and The Titanic Detective Agency, published by Cranachan Books. She has also written The Rewilders and Euro Spies for Cranachan, alongside school reading titles including Terror on Titanic and The Last Zeppelin for Badger Learning.
Ice Cream Boy, published by Floris Books in 2024, follows twelve-year-old Luca as he deals with changes to his family’s ice cream business, his grandmother’s dementia and racism directed at a friend. It was shortlisted for Peters Children’s Book of the Year 2025 and the Alexandra Palace Children’s Book Award. Littleson’s tenth novel, Linnet and the Periwinkle Flyer, was published by Tiny Tree Books in August 2025 and was selected as Scottish Book Trust’s Junior Book of the Month in January 2026.
