Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Leo Timmers is a Belgian author and illustrator of children’s books. He studied graphic design and began his career illustrating for magazines and books. Timmers is known for both writing and illustrating his own picture books, which have been published internationally and translated into multiple languages.
His notable works include Monkey on the Run, Who’s Driving?, Franky, Gus’s Garage, and Bang. Timmers’ books are recognised for their detailed illustrations and visual storytelling. Monkey on the Run was selected for the New York Times/New York Public Library Best Illustrated Children’s Books list in 2019. Who’s Driving? was shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal in 2021.
Leo Timmers’ books have received several awards, including the Boekenpauw, a Flemish prize for best illustrated children’s book, which he won for Kind Crocodile and Bang. His work has been published by publishers such as Gecko Press and Bloomsbury.
In 2022, Timmers’ book Elephant Island was published in English by Gecko Press. His books have been adapted for stage and television, including the animated series Ziggy and the Zootram, based on his book Ziggy.
Leo Timmers continues to publish picture books that are widely read and translated. In 2023, Where Is the Dragon? was published in English translation.
