Children’s book news for April 2026: Michael Rosen wins the Hans Christian Andersen Award, CLiPPA and UKLA shortlists arrive, and Puffin launches its new picture book list, Puffin Studio.
Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Huw Aaron is a Welsh cartoonist, author, illustrator and graphic novelist. After working in finance, he became a magazine cartoonist and has produced joke cartoons for publications including Private Eye, Prospect and The Spectator.
Alongside his cartoon work, Aaron has written and illustrated children’s books in Welsh and English. Publisher biographies state that, since 2013, he has written or illustrated more than 60 Welsh-language books. He was the founding editor of the Welsh-language comic Mellten.
In 2021 he created Ha Ha Cnec, the Welsh-language £1 World Book Day title, published by Llyfrau Broga. In picture books, he is the author of Sleep Tight, Disgusting Blob (Puffin, 2025). He also writes and draws the Unfairies graphic novel series for Puffin.
With Luned Aaron, he co-created Dwi Eisiau bod yn Ddeinosor (Atebol, 2022), which won the Tir na n-Og Award in 2023 and the Literature Wales Book of the Year prize in the Children and Young People category in 2023.
Sleep Tight, Disgusting Blob was published by Puffin in 2025.

Unfairies is a bright, action-packed, and funny graphic novel that moves along at a very fast pace and there are plenty of characters to meet, especially Pip, the main protagonist, who is on nearly every page.
