Gillian Clements biography

Gillian Clements is a children’s non-fiction author and illustrator who studied Illustration under Raymond Briggs at Brighton Polytechnic. Her work uses words and pictures to introduce history topics to young readers, including books about major British events, explorers, inventors, castles and ancient cities.

Picture History of Great Inventors was published in 1994 and introduces major innovators across thousands of years, from the invention of the wheel to space technology and virtual reality. The book uses timelines, diagrams and a glossary to support children’s understanding of scientific and historical vocabulary.

The Great Fire of London is a 48-page paperback published by Franklin Watts on 13 June 2002 for readers aged 8 to 12. The book explains the 1666 fire, how it began, and its consequences, using simple narrative text and informative line illustrations for upper Key Stage 1 readers.

The Picture History of Great Explorers is a 96-page children’s non-fiction book about more than 80 explorers, ranging from the ancient world to journeys into the deepest oceans, the Moon and Mars. The book includes figures such as Marco Polo, Columbus, Vasco da Gama, Richard Burton, René-Auguste Caillié and Isabella Bird Bishop, and it includes a glossary and index.

Clements also wrote history titles for the Great Events series, including Battle of Hastings, a 48-page account of Harold’s defeat in 1066 and the beginning of the Norman Conquest, published in 2001.
