George M. Johnson is a Black nonbinary writer, author and activist. Their books for young adult readers include the memoirs All Boys Aren’t Blue and We Are Not Broken.
All Boys Aren’t Blue: A Memoir-Manifesto was published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux Books for Young Readers on 28 April 2020. The book is a young-adult memoir told through personal essays, and it covers Johnson’s childhood, adolescence and college years in New Jersey and Virginia, with topics including gender identity, toxic masculinity, brotherhood, family, structural marginalisation, consent and Black joy.
We Are Not Broken was published by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. The memoir tells the story of George, Garrett, Rall and Rasul, four children raised by their grandmother, and includes letters from the grandchildren to her.
Flamboyants: The Queer Harlem Renaissance I Wish I’d Known was written by Johnson and illustrated by Charly Palmer. Farrar, Straus and Giroux Books for Young Readers published it on 24 September 2024 for readers aged 14 to 18; the book presents essays about Black and Queer figures from the Harlem Renaissance.
