Eva Wong Nava is a children’s author whose work includes picture books, historical fiction and retellings for young readers. Her picture book I Love Chinese New Year, illustrated by Li Xin, was published by Scholastic in 2022 and introduces young children to family preparations, food, the Great Race story and Dragon Dance traditions connected with Chinese New Year.
Her book East Asian Folktales, Myths and Legends was published by Scholastic on 14 March 2024, with illustrations by Jocelyn Kao. The collection retells classic folktales, myths and legends from China, Korea, Japan and beyond, including stories about the twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac, major festivals, Hua Mulan, Chang’e, Hou Yi and the rabbit in the moon. Scholastic describes the book as part of the Scholastic Classics series and gives the edition an ISBN of 9780702325236 and a length of 272 pages.
Eva Wong Nava has also written The House of Little Sisters, a young adult historical novel set in Singapore in August 1931. The story follows sixteen-year-old Lim Mei Mei, also called Ah Mei, after she is sold as a mui tsai, an indentured servant girl, and it combines historical fiction with a ghost-story element connected to another mui tsai, Ah Lian.
Her earlier children’s book Open: A Boy’s Wayang Adventure centres on Open, a ten-year-old boy on the autism spectrum who loves drawing monkeys and prepares to take part in a Chinese opera based on the Monkey King and Journey to the West. Open: A Boy’s Wayang Adventure won the bronze medal in the Moonbeam Children’s Book Award in 2018.
