Anna Sewell was an English novelist best known for her classic work, Black Beauty. Born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, Sewell was the daughter of Isaac and Mary Sewell. Her mother was a successful author of children’s books, which influenced Sewell’s literary pursuits.
Sewell’s education was limited due to a debilitating injury at the age of 14, which left her with mobility issues. Despite this, she developed a deep love for horses and became an advocate for their humane treatment. This passion is reflected in her writing.
Her only published work, Black Beauty, was completed in 1877. The novel is narrated from the perspective of a horse and addresses themes of animal welfare and empathy. It was initially intended for an adult audience, but it gained immense popularity as a children’s book.
Published by Jarrold & Sons, Black Beauty was an immediate success. It has since become one of the best-selling books of all time, translated into numerous languages and adapted into various films and television series.
Anna Sewell passed away in 1878, just five months after the publication of Black Beauty. Her work has left a lasting impact on animal welfare and children’s literature.
