Yassmin Abdel-Magied biography

Yassmin Abdel-Magied is a Sudanese-Australian writer, broadcaster, and social advocate. She is the author of several books, including the memoir Yassmin’s Story, published by Penguin Random House Australia in 2016, and the young adult novel You Must Be Layla, published by Penguin Random House Australia in 2019. Abdel-Magied has also written Listen, Layla, a sequel to her debut novel, released in 2021.

Abdel-Magied studied mechanical engineering at university and worked as an engineer on oil and gas rigs. She is known for her work in promoting diversity and inclusion, particularly in STEM fields. In addition to her writing, Abdel-Magied has presented television programmes and delivered talks on social issues, including a TED talk in 2014 titled “What does my headscarf mean to you?”

Her writing has appeared in publications such as The Guardian and The New York Times. Abdel-Magied has also contributed to anthologies, including Growing Up African in Australia (2019, Black Inc.).

In 2022, Yassmin Abdel-Magied published Talking About a Revolution, a collection of essays, with Penguin Random House Australia.
