Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Tom McLaughlin is a British author and illustrator known for his work in children’s literature. He began his career as a political cartoonist and illustrator, contributing to publications such as The Western Morning News and The Guardian. McLaughlin later transitioned to writing and illustrating books for children.
His debut as an author-illustrator came with The Diabolical Mr Tiddles, published by Simon & Schuster in 2011. He has since written and illustrated several picture books and middle-grade novels. Notable works include The Story Machine (2014), The Accidental Prime Minister (2015), The Accidental Secret Agent (2016), and Up, Up and Away (2017). His books are published by major UK publishers such as Oxford University Press and Bloomsbury.
McLaughlin’s titles have been shortlisted for awards including the Oxfordshire Book Award and the Coventry Inspiration Book Awards. The Accidental Prime Minister was selected for the 2016 Summer Reading Challenge, a national reading initiative in the UK. In addition to his writing, McLaughlin regularly visits schools and festivals to discuss his work and promote literacy.
His most recent publications include Along Came a Different (2018) and Attack of the Smart Speakers (2021). McLaughlin’s books have been translated into multiple languages and are available internationally.
