Susan Hill is a British author known for her work in both adult and children’s literature. She studied at King’s College London. Hill’s first novel, The Enclosure, was published in 1961. She is widely recognised for her ghost story The Woman in Black, published in 1983, which has been adapted for stage and screen.
Hill has written several books for children and young adults, including I’m the King of the Castle (1970), which won the Somerset Maugham Award, and Strange Meeting (1971). Her children’s titles also include Can It Be True? (1987) and The Glass Angels (1991). She has contributed to anthologies and collections, and her works have been translated into multiple languages.
In addition to her fiction, Hill has written non-fiction and edited anthologies. She was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2020 for services to literature. The Woman in Black remains one of her most enduring works, with its stage adaptation becoming one of the longest-running plays in the West End.
