Soledad Romero Mariño biography

Soledad Romero Mariño is a Spanish children’s author, editor and designer whose work focuses on visually led non-fiction for primary and lower-secondary readers. She trained in graphic design at Llotja (Escola Superior de Disseny i d’Art) and worked for more than a decade as a creative in advertising before moving into children’s publishing. She later founded an independent imprint, producing magazines and illustrated books, and now writes, edits and designs children’s titles.

Romero Mariño’s catalogue spans science, nature, history and culture. With Zahorí Books she has authored large-format reference titles including Legendary Escapes (2021) and Famous Spies (2023). Her science and cosmology books include Infinito (2020) and the English-language picture book Opposites: The Opposing Forces of the Universe. She also writes nature titles for Phaidon: Superpowered Animals: Meet the World’s Strongest, Smartest, and Swiftest Creatures (2023) and Superpowered Plants: Meet the Smartest, Strongest, and Sneakiest Plants (2025), both illustrated by Sonia Pulido. A board-book spin-off, The Secret Powers of Animals, followed in 2025.

Her cultural and music list includes the “Band Records” picture-book series for Reservoir Kids, with child-friendly introductions to artists such as Ramones, Metallica, Depeche Mode, Queen and Janis Joplin. Her books are issued internationally and recorded in retailer and library catalogues in multiple languages.

Across these projects Romero Mariño combines concise, factual text with graphic presentation to support classroom topics, independent reading and cross-curricular work for ages 7–12. Superpowered Animals was published in 2023; Superpowered Plants was published in 2025.
