Satoshi Kitamura is a Japanese author and illustrator known for his work in children’s literature. Born in Tokyo, Japan, Kitamura moved to London in 1979, where he began his career in illustration. His first picture book, Angry Arthur, written by Hiawyn Oram, was published in 1982 and won the Mother Goose Award for the most exciting newcomer to British children’s book illustration.
Kitamura has since illustrated numerous books, both his own and those of other authors. Notable works include When Sheep Cannot Sleep: The Counting Book (1986), Duck is Dirty (1989), and Millie’s Marvellous Hat (2009). His distinctive style is characterized by detailed and imaginative illustrations, often incorporating elements of surrealism.
In addition to his work as an illustrator, Kitamura has written and illustrated several books, including Cat is Sleepy (1988) and Me and My Cat? (1999). His book Me and My Cat? was shortlisted for the Smarties Prize and has been translated into multiple languages.
