Robert Muchamore is a British author best known for the CHERUB series, a collection of young adult spy thrillers that has sold millions of copies worldwide. Born on 26 December 1972 in Tufnell Park, North London, he grew up as the youngest of four children. He attended local schools, including Acland Burghley School, and later worked in a photographic agency before becoming a full-time writer.
Muchamore began writing the CHERUB series in the early 2000s, motivated by the lack of engaging books for teenagers that combined action, realism, and humour. The series centres on a branch of the British Security Service that employs orphaned children as undercover agents. The first book, The Recruit, was published in 2004 and was followed by several sequels, concluding with a second arc known as the Aramov series.
Following the success of CHERUB, he created Henderson’s Boys, a wartime prequel set during the Second World War, charting the foundation of the CHERUB organisation. He has also written the Rock War series, which follows a group of teenagers in a competitive music environment, and a contemporary reworking of the Robin Hood legend, set in a divided modern Britain.
Muchamore’s writing is known for its fast pace, realistic dialogue, and attention to the everyday challenges faced by teenagers, alongside high-stakes missions and complex plots. His books have been particularly popular among reluctant readers and have featured on school reading lists across the UK.
He continues to write and engage with readers through school events and festivals, and remains a leading voice in UK teen fiction. He lives in London.
