Rina Singh biography

Rina Singh is a Canadian children’s author and educator. She has written numerous picture books and poetry collections, often exploring themes of culture, identity, and social justice. Singh holds a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Concordia University.

Her published works include Grandmother School (2020), illustrated by Ellen Rooney, which was recognised as a 2021 Ezra Jack Keats Honor Book. Other titles include 111 Trees: How One Village Celebrates the Birth of Every Girl (2020), illustrated by Marianne Ferrer, and Diwali: A Festival of Lights (2016), illustrated by Kathleen McLeod. Singh’s book A Garden of Grenades: Poems of Love, War and Peace (2016) was published by Wolsak & Wynn.

Her work has received several accolades. 111 Trees was selected as a 2021 Bank Street Best Children’s Book of the Year and received the 2021 Green Earth Book Award Honor. Grandmother School was shortlisted for the 2021 TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award. Singh’s books have been translated into multiple languages and are published by various houses, including Orca Book Publishers and Kids Can Press.

Rina Singh continues to write and publish books for children, with her work recognised by awards such as the Ezra Jack Keats Honor in 2021.
