Phùng Nguyên Quang biography

Phùng Nguyên Quang is a picture-book author and illustrator whose work is influenced by the folk cultures of Vietnam and Asia. He often collaborates with illustrator Huỳnh Kim Liên under the studio name KAA, producing narrative art for children’s publishing in a distinctive, atmospheric style.

Quang and Liên created My First Day, a story set in the Mekong Delta that follows a child’s first solo journey to school through rain, waves and mangrove forest. The book was published in 2021 by Make Me a World/Random House Studio. Their non-fiction collaboration with author Scott Riley, The Floating Field: How a Group of Thai Boys Built Their Own Soccer Field, was published in 2021 by Lerner Publishing Group.

Quang works across watercolour, acrylic and digital techniques, and his commissions include projects for major international publishers. His portfolio spans author-illustrator projects and collaborations that foreground landscape, movement and the natural world.

The First Journey, the precursor to My First Day, won the Scholastic Picture Book Award in 2015.
