Natalie Babbitt was an American author and illustrator known for her contributions to children’s literature. She began her career in publishing as an illustrator, collaborating with her husband, Samuel Fisher Babbitt, on the book The Forty-ninth Magician, which was published in 1966. Following this, she wrote and illustrated her own books, establishing herself as both a writer and an artist.

Babbitt is particularly recognised for her novel Tuck Everlasting, first published in 1975. The book explores themes of immortality and the natural cycle of life, and has become a widely studied text in schools. In addition to Tuck Everlasting, Babbitt wrote several other books for children, including Kneeknock Rise and The Search for Delicious. She also illustrated works by other authors, further demonstrating her versatility in the field.

Her writing is noted for its imaginative storytelling and thoughtful exploration of complex themes suitable for young readers. Babbitt’s work has received recognition from various literary organisations. Kneeknock Rise was named a Newbery Honor Book in 1971.
