Michael Bond was a British author best known for creating the beloved character Paddington Bear. Born in Newbury, Berkshire, Bond began his career as a cameraman for the BBC. His first book, A Bear Called Paddington, was published in 1958 by William Collins & Sons. The story introduced readers to the friendly bear from Peru who finds a home with the Brown family in London.
Bond continued to write numerous books featuring Paddington, with the series being translated into over 30 languages and selling more than 30 million copies worldwide. The Paddington series includes titles such as Paddington Helps Out (1960), Paddington Abroad (1961), and Paddington at Large (1962).
In addition to the Paddington series, Bond authored other children’s books, including the Olga da Polga series, which began with The Tales of Olga da Polga in 1971. He also wrote adult fiction, such as the Monsieur Pamplemousse series, which combines elements of mystery and comedy.
Bond’s work has been adapted into various media, including television series and films. The character of Paddington Bear became an iconic figure in children’s literature, leading to a successful film adaptation in 2014, followed by a sequel in 2017.
In recognition of his contributions to children’s literature, Michael Bond was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1997. He continued to write until his passing in 2017, leaving behind a legacy cherished by readers of all ages.
