Maureen Bakis is a US high school English teacher and author whose work focuses on using graphic novels to develop literacy in secondary classrooms. She has taught at Masconomet Regional High School in Massachusetts and has presented on teaching with comics at regional and national events, including New York Comic Con and Harvard University’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies.
Her professional guide, The Graphic Novel Classroom: POWerful Teaching and Learning with Images, outlines practical approaches for reading, writing and critical thinking with visual texts. The book draws on classroom experience and offers strategies, unit ideas and assessment suggestions for teachers adopting comics and graphic novels across the curriculum.
Bakis curates resources for educators through her site Graphic Novels & High School English, sharing examples, lesson materials and reflections on practice.
