Markus Zusak is an Australian author known for his work in young adult and children’s literature. He published his first novel, The Underdog, in 1999, followed by Fighting Ruben Wolfe (2000) and When Dogs Cry (2001), which are collectively known as the Wolfe Brothers series. In 2002, he released The Messenger (published as I Am the Messenger in some regions), which won the 2003 Children’s Book Council of Australia Book of the Year Award for Older Readers.
Zusak achieved international recognition with The Book Thief, published in 2005. The novel has been translated into more than forty languages and has sold millions of copies worldwide. The Book Thief received numerous accolades, including the 2006 Michael L. Printz Honor and the 2007 Kathleen Mitchell Award. The book was adapted into a feature film released in 2013.
In 2018, Zusak published Bridge of Clay, his first novel in over a decade. His works have been published by Pan Macmillan and Alfred A. Knopf. Zusak has received the Margaret A. Edwards Award from the American Library Association in 2014 for his significant and lasting contribution to young adult literature.
His books have appeared on bestseller lists and have been recognised with multiple literary awards, including the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best Book (South East Asia and South Pacific) for The Book Thief in 2006.
