Marc Mulholland is a historian and author from Northern Ireland, known for his academic work and writing on Irish history and political thought. He is a Professor of Modern History at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of St Catherine’s College, Oxford. Mulholland’s research interests include the history of political thought, revolutionary movements, and the history of Ireland, particularly in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
He has published several books, including Ulster Unionism and the Collapse of Irish Home Rule, 1912–14 (Oxford University Press, 2000), which examines the political dynamics and unionist opposition during the period leading up to the First World War. Another notable work is Bourbon Socialism: The Chavist Venezuela and the End of the Road, reflecting his interest in political ideologies and their historical development.
Mulholland has also written The Longest War: Northern Ireland’s Troubled History (Oxford University Press, 2002), which provides an analysis of the conflict in Northern Ireland, exploring its origins, development, and impact. His academic articles and essays have appeared in various scholarly journals, contributing to debates on revolution, class, and political change.
In addition to his historical research, Mulholland has published a novel, Shake off the Dust (Seren, 2018), set in Belfast and exploring themes of politics and society. He continues to teach and research at Oxford, focusing on the intersections of history, politics, and society.
