Malorie Blackman OBE is a British author renowned for her contributions to children’s and young adult literature. Her work often explores social and ethical issues through speculative fiction, notably in her acclaimed Noughts & Crosses series.
Born in Clapham, London, to Barbadian parents who were part of the Windrush generation, Blackman grew up in Lewisham. She initially aspired to be an English teacher but pursued a career in computer science, earning an HNC at Thames Polytechnic and later studying at the National Film and Television School. Before turning to writing, she worked as a systems programmer.
Blackman’s literary debut came in 1990 with Not So Stupid!, a collection of short stories. Since then, she has authored over 70 books, including novels, short story collections, picture books, and television scripts. Her Noughts & Crosses series, beginning in 2001, is set in an alternative Britain and examines themes of racism and societal division. The series has been adapted for stage, radio, and television.
In addition to her novels, Blackman has written for television, contributing to programmes such as Byker Grove, Whizziwig, and Pig-Heart Boy. In 2018, she co-wrote the “Rosa” episode of Doctor Who, becoming the first person of colour to write for the series.
Blackman’s contributions to literature have been recognised with numerous awards. She was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2008 for services to children’s literature. From 2013 to 2015, she served as the UK’s Children’s Laureate, during which she initiated the Young Adult Literature Convention (YALC). In 2022, she received the PEN Pinter Prize, sharing it with Dr Abduljalil Al-Singace as the International Writer of Courage.
Her memoir, Just Sayin’: My Life In Words, was published in 2022, offering insights into her personal and professional journey.
Malorie Blackman resides in Kent with her husband, Neil, and their daughter, Elizabeth. Beyond writing, she enjoys playing the piano, composing music, and engaging with poetry.
