Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Katherine Rundell is a British author known for her children’s and young adult fiction. She was born in Kent, England, and spent part of her childhood in Zimbabwe and Brussels. Rundell attended the University of Oxford, where she studied English and later completed a doctorate on John Donne.
Rundell’s debut novel, Rooftoppers, was published in 2013. The book received critical acclaim and won the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize and the Blue Peter Book Award. Her subsequent novel, The Wolf Wilder, was published in 2015 and was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal.
In 2017, Rundell released The Explorer, which won the Costa Children’s Book Award. Her other works include The Good Thieves (2019) and One Christmas Wish (2017). Rundell is also known for her non-fiction work, Why You Should Read Children’s Books, Even Though You Are So Old and Wise, published in 2019.
Rundell’s books have been translated into multiple languages, and she has been recognised for her contribution to children’s literature. In 2021, she was elected a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford. Her work continues to be celebrated for its imaginative storytelling and rich character development.
