Kate Messner is an American author known for her work in children’s literature, including picture books, chapter books, and novels for young readers. She began her career as a journalist and later worked as a middle school English teacher before becoming a full-time writer. Messner’s books often explore themes related to nature, science, and history, and she is recognised for her ability to engage young readers with both fiction and non-fiction.

Her published works include the Ranger in Time series, which follows a time-travelling golden retriever who helps people in different historical periods. She is also the author of the Over and Under picture book series, illustrated by Christopher Silas Neal, which introduces children to the natural world through stories set in various environments. In addition, Messner has written the Fergus and Zeke early reader series, illustrated by Heather Ross, and the Marty McGuire chapter book series, illustrated by Brian Floca.
