Jo Empson biography

Jo Empson is a British author and illustrator known for her work in children’s picture books. She studied at Cambridge School of Art, where she completed an MA in Children’s Book Illustration. Empson’s background in graphic design and illustration informs her distinctive visual style, which often features expressive characters and vibrant use of colour.

Her debut picture book, Rabbityness, was published by Child’s Play in 2012. The book explores themes of individuality and creativity, and it was recognised by several award shortlists, including the Kate Greenaway Medal and the UK Literacy Association Book Award. Empson’s subsequent titles include Never Ever (Child’s Play, 2012), Little Home Bird (Child’s Play, 2015), and Chickens Can’t See in the Dark (Puffin, 2013).

Empson’s books have been published by a range of UK publishers, including Child’s Play and Puffin. Her work is noted for its focus on imaginative storytelling and visual narrative. In addition to writing and illustrating her own books, she has also illustrated texts by other authors.

Jo Empson’s picture book Rabbityness was shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal in 2013.
