Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Jeffrey Boakye is a British author and educator known for his work in children’s and young adult literature. He has a background in teaching, having worked as an English teacher in secondary schools. Boakye’s writing often explores themes of race, identity, and culture, drawing from his experiences and insights as a teacher.
His debut book, Hold Tight: Black Masculinity, Millennials and the Meaning of Grime, was published in 2017. This non-fiction work examines the cultural significance of grime music in the UK and its impact on black British identity. Boakye’s exploration of music and culture continued with Black, Listed: Black British Culture Explored, released in 2019, which delves into the nuances of black British culture through a series of essays.
In 2021, Boakye published I Heard What You Said, a book that provides a candid look at the challenges and experiences of being a black teacher in the UK education system. This work further solidified his reputation as a writer who addresses important social issues with clarity and insight.
Boakye has also contributed to educational resources, co-authoring What is Masculinity? Why Does it Matter? And Other Big Questions with Darren Chetty, which was published in 2019. This book is part of a series aimed at engaging young readers with critical questions about society and identity.
