Ian McEwan is a British author known for his novels, short stories, and screenplays. He studied at the University of Sussex and later completed a master’s degree in creative writing at the University of East Anglia. McEwan’s first collection of short stories, First Love, Last Rites, was published in 1975 and won the Somerset Maugham Award in 1976. His debut novel, The Cement Garden, appeared in 1978, followed by The Comfort of Strangers in 1981, which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize.
McEwan’s subsequent works include The Child in Time (1987), which won the Whitbread Novel Award, and Enduring Love (1997). In 1998, he published Amsterdam, which received the Booker Prize for Fiction. Atonement (2001) was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and the WH Smith Literary Award, and was later adapted into an Oscar-winning film. Other notable novels include Saturday (2005), On Chesil Beach (2007), which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize, Solar (2010), Sweet Tooth (2012), The Children Act (2014), Nutshell (2016), and Machines Like Me (2019).
McEwan has also written libretti, screenplays, and children’s books, including The Daydreamer (1994). He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 1982 and was awarded a CBE in 2000. In 2011, he received the Jerusalem Prize for the Freedom of the Individual in Society. His novel Lessons was published in 2022.
