Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Helen Docherty is a British author known for her picture books for children. She studied modern languages at the University of Oxford and later completed an MA in Film and Television Production at the University of Bristol. Before becoming a full-time writer, Docherty worked as a language teacher in various countries, including Spain and Mexico.
Docherty’s writing often features rhyme and playful language. Her debut picture book, The Snatchabook, was illustrated by Thomas Docherty and published by Alison Green Books in 2013. The story centres on a mysterious creature who steals books from the woodland animals, and it has been published in several editions. Helen Docherty has continued to collaborate with Thomas Docherty on other titles, including The Knight Who Wouldn’t Fight and Abracazebra, both published by Alison Green Books.
Her books have been recognised by various organisations. The Snatchabook was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize in 2014.
