Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Hannah Gold is a British children’s author. Her debut novel, The Last Bear, was published by HarperCollins Children’s Books in 2021. The book features illustrations by Levi Pinfold and tells the story of a girl named April who befriends a polar bear on a remote Arctic island.
The Last Bear received the 2022 Blue Peter Book Award for Best Story and the 2022 Waterstones Children’s Book Prize for Younger Readers. The novel was also shortlisted for the 2022 British Book Awards Children’s Fiction Book of the Year.
Gold’s second novel, The Lost Whale, was published in 2022 by HarperCollins Children’s Books. This book follows a boy named Rio who travels to California and forms a connection with a grey whale named White Beak.
Her third book, Finding Bear, was published in 2023. It is a sequel to The Last Bear and continues the story of April and Bear.
Before becoming an author, Gold worked in the film and magazine industries. She studied at the University of Nottingham. Her books have been translated into multiple languages and have received critical recognition in the UK.
In 2022, The Last Bear was selected as a World Book Day title.
