Gail Armstrong biography

Gail Armstrong (born 1966) is a British illustrator renowned for her work in paper sculpture and three-dimensional illustration. She was born in Sheffield and completed a foundation course in art and design at Sheffield Polytechnic in 1984.

She studied at Glasgow School of Art, earning a bachelor’s degree in graphic design and illustration in 1987, followed by a master’s degree in 1988. After relocating to London, she initially worked as a graphic designer before focusing solely on her illustration practice.

Armstrong specialises in transforming flat sheets of paper into detailed sculptural imagery. Her work appears across children’s publishing, editorial illustration, advertising, animation and design. She is represented by illustration agencies such as IllustrationX.

Her commercial clients include Kleenex, and she has produced campaigns such as the “Feelings” series for Kleenex. In recognition of her work, she has won awards such as Cannes Lions (Gold, Bronze) and been shortlisted for the World Illustration Awards. She also won the Asiago International Award for Philatelic Art in 2012 for a United Nations stamp design.

Armstrong is a member of the UK’s Association of Illustrators. Selected achievement: Cannes Lions Gold (2010) for her Kleenex “Feelings” campaign.
