Deborah Ellis biography

Deborah Ellis is a Canadian author known for her works of fiction for children and young adults. She began writing at a young age and has focused much of her career on stories that explore social justice issues and the experiences of young people in challenging circumstances. Ellis is particularly recognised for her research-based approach, often drawing on interviews and first-hand accounts to inform her writing.

Her most widely known work is the Breadwinner series, which follows the story of a young girl named Parvana living under Taliban rule in Afghanistan. The first book in the series, The Breadwinner, was published in 2000. The series includes sequels such as Parvana’s Journey, Mud City, and My Name is Parvana. These books have been published by Groundwood Books.

In addition to the Breadwinner series, Ellis has written other novels addressing global issues, including Looking for X, Jakeman, and No Safe Place. Her writing often highlights the resilience of young people facing adversity in various parts of the world.

Deborah Ellis has received several awards for her work. Looking for X won the Governor General’s Literary Award for Children’s Literature (Text) in 2000.
