Catherine Johnson biography

Catherine Johnson is a British author known for her work in children’s and young adult fiction. She has written over twenty books, including Sawbones, which won the Young Quills Award for Historical Fiction in 2014. Johnson’s novel Freedom was awarded the Little Rebels Children’s Book Award in 2019. Her writing often explores historical themes and diverse narratives.

Johnson’s published works include Other Colours (1997), Landlocked (1999), Hero (2001), Stella (2002), Face Value (2003), Brave New Girl (2004), Arctic Hero (2007), A Nest of Vipers (2008), To the Edge of the World (2018), and Queen of Freedom (2023). Her books have been published by major UK publishers, including Walker Books and Scholastic.

In addition to her novels, Johnson has written for television and radio, contributing scripts for the BBC and Channel 4. She has also worked as a Royal Literary Fund Fellow and has been involved in various educational and literary outreach programmes.

In 2020, Johnson was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. Her novel Freedom was selected for the 2022 EmpathyLab Read for Empathy collection.
