Ashley Jackson is a British historian and academic known for his research on the British Empire. Born in Bristol in 1971, he studied at the University of Greenwich before earning a doctorate from the University of Oxford. Jackson is Professor of Imperial and Military History at King’s College London and a visiting fellow at Kellogg College, Oxford.
He specialises in imperial, military, and African history, with early works including Botswana, 1939–1945: An African Country at War and War and Empire in Mauritius and the Indian Ocean. In 2006, he published The British Empire and the Second World War, examining the empire’s global role during the conflict.
In 2013, Oxford University Press released his The British Empire: A Very Short Introduction, offering a concise and accessible overview of imperial history for students and general readers. Jackson has also written popular works such as Mad Dogs and Englishmen: A Grand Tour of the British Empire at Its Height and a biography of Winston Churchill.
