Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Antoinette Portis writes and illustrates books for children. She attended the UCLA School of Fine Arts and worked as a creative director at Disney before publishing picture books.
Her books include Not a Box, Not a Stick and A Penguin Story. Not a Box was named a New York Times Best Illustrated Book and received a 2007 Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor. A Penguin Story was also named a New York Times Best Illustrated Book.
Hey, Water! was published on 26 March 2019 and is a 48-page picture book for ages 4 to 8. The book received a Sibert Honor, and Portis’s ALA Notable Books include Wait and Now.
A New Green Day was published on 14 April 2020 as a 40-page hardcover for ages 3 to 7. The book uses poetic riddles to follow animals, plants and weather through one child’s outdoor day.
A Seed Grows was published on 21 June 2022 as a 40-page picture book for ages 4 to 8. It follows the life cycle of a sunflower and includes back matter explaining plant life cycles. A Seed Grows received a Sibert Honor and a Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor.
To Activate Space Portal, Lift Here was published on 7 October 2025 as a 56-page picture book for ages 4 to 8.
