Andrew Marr is a British journalist, author and broadcaster. Born in Glasgow in 1959, he read English at Trinity Hall, Cambridge before beginning his journalism career at The Scotsman in 1981. He went on to serve as political editor at The Independent (1992–96) and later became editor of that newspaper (1996–98).
In May 2000, Marr joined BBC News as political editor, a role he held until 2005. From September 2005 he presented a Sunday morning political programme on BBC One, initially titled Sunday AM and later renamed The Andrew Marr Show, which aired its final episode in December 2021.
His television work includes hosting the documentary series Andrew Marr’s History of Modern Britain (2007), followed by The Making of Modern Britain (2009), Britain from Above (2008) and Andrew Marr’s History of the World (2012).
In January 2013, Marr suffered a stroke and returned to broadcasting later that year. He departed the BBC in December 2021 to join Global, where he began presenting on LBC and Classic FM, and was appointed Political Editor of the New Statesman.
Among his honours, Marr received the British Academy Television Awards’ Richard Dimbleby Award in 2004 and Best Specialist Factual Programme in 2008, and was awarded an honorary doctorate from Staffordshire University in 2009.
