Aislinn Brophy is an American young adult author, playwright and theatre artist. They graduated from Harvard University with an A.B. in Theater, Dance & Media as a member of the programme’s first graduating class. Their theatre work includes acting with companies such as Company One, Brown Box Theatre Project and Central Square Theater, while their play with music Water, Water Everywhere received its world premiere from ISLE Theater Company.
Brophy’s debut novel, How to Succeed in Witchcraft, was published by G.P. Putnam’s Sons Books for Young Readers in 2022. The contemporary YA fantasy follows high-achieving witch Shay Johnson as she competes for a university scholarship at a magical school while confronting inappropriate behaviour by the teacher who controls the award. The novel was selected for YALSA’s 2024 Best Fiction for Young Adults list and was a 2023 honoree of the American Library Association’s Rise: A Feminist Book Project.
Their second YA novel, Spells to Forget Us, was published by G.P. Putnam’s Sons Books for Young Readers in September 2024. It follows witch Luna and non-magical Aoife, whose relationship becomes caught in a cycle of break-ups, erased memories and repeated meetings. The novel was nominated for an Ignyte Award for Outstanding Novel: Young Adult, longlisted for a Massachusetts Book Award and selected as a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard title.
Brophy’s third YA fantasy, The Divinity Thieves, follows rival con artists Fawn and Mackie as they enter a dangerous competition in which demigods can win divine power. G.P. Putnam’s Sons Books for Young Readers is scheduled to publish the novel on 26 January 2027.
